If you’re like me you find yourself begging for fall to hold off for at least another month. Here in upstate New York our winters are L O N G and the end of summer just means that winter is getting closer. Every year, about a week before Labor Day, I find myself in a full blown panic over the “loss” of summer. And then it happens. Just like clock work we get a couple of cool days and everything changes! The leaves on our trees begin to turn ever so slightly. The night’s dark sky dances with the sparkling stars among the cool crisp air. The moon swells and the Friday night football lights shine bright with promises of excitement and good cheer. Our summer vegetables begin to wither away while our fall crop displays produce in delicious colors. Ruby red apples; jeweled-tone purple eggplant; golden pears; burnt orange pumpkins, carrots, and winter squash adorn our public markets and the beautiful aroma of spiced cider fills the air.
Fabulous Fall Infection
It happens so quick that I feel “infected”, but in a good way! I fall in love with fall and my worries about summer slipping away…just slip away. Just like that I begin dreaming about the awesome changes in the making and the fun that’s about to be had by all. Fall is here! The first biggest change I make is always on my front porch! It’s my way of embracing the change without actually invading my living space with decoration that will be around till Thanksgiving. It’s the easiest change, the least expensive and the most dramatic of all the porches of the seasons. Introducing: my pumpkin-filled fall front porch!
Pop of Power Color
Alright, so my porch isn’t really filled with tons and tons of pumpkins, but I can say that the back of my car was filled to the max. I had no idea what my porch was going to look like when I began my fall decorating adventure. I first headed to a couple of local stores for inspiration and then I stumbled upon these yummy soft plaid blankets. At that very second I realized I had to have them…(I blame this on the ‘infection’). These very blankets became to inspiration behind the entire pumpkin-filled fall front porch! The golden yellow contrasts so well against the crisp white and bold black plaid. I really wanted to pop that powerful golden yellow so I set out for the perfect solid yellow pillows and WHAM! Home goods never disappoints.
As if I wasn’t feeling lucky enough already I turned the aisle and nearly ran right into this awesome yellow wooden bucket. Say what????? I finally had a plan in place. All it took was a blanket and a color theme!
If you follow me on Instagram then you’d know that I found these great vintage fruit crates circa 1940. I’ve already used them twice and I’ve only owned them for a week!!! Check out how I used them here for my Effortless Burger Bar. I can’t say it enough- playing with different levels on your front porch (or on any flat space for this matter) can make all the difference between a boring front porch and an interesting one. You can have all the makings of a beautiful pumpkin-filled front porch, but if everything is on the same level then it will most likely get lost. These cool vintage crates allowed me the opportunity to stack pumpkins and flower pots at all different levels.
Most everyone’s first instinct in every situation of design is to always fill space with all the colors of the rainbow. However, if we can be just a little more picky when it comes to the colors we allow into our space then the space itself begins to feel more planned. Planned spaces feel well-though and people are more drawn to space like this. As you know, on this pumpkin-filled fall front porch I chose the color yellow as my power color. Purple is another power color and in the right tone it can highlight yellow and really make it sing. I found these beautiful fall cabbage with gorgeous purple veins and fluffy purple flowered mums for texture. To encourage the color integration of orange pumpkins I purchased two Indian Summer Coleus plants. Each leaf blends together the fall colors of golden yellow, deep orange and fire red.
My Fall Porch Buddies
I’ve told you guys just how much we love our front porch…and our puppies! Often at sunset my husband and I perch ourselves out here on our rockers like little old retired folk living out their golden years. LOL. Of course, right at our heels are our pups, who love this porch even more than us.
Bar Cart Beauty
You might have noticed that I have a cute little bar cart tucked right behind one of my porch rockers. This is by far my most versatile purchase of the year and I got it at Wayfair. Click here to get product details. Read how I used this bar cart in the early summer here. I love that it provides me with additional space to place things, like a wine glass, coffee mug, dessert plate, or in this case my potted purple mum. Take a good look at its gorgeous leucite legs.
Well, If you aren’t infected with the fall yet, I wish you lots of luck. The change has my blood pumping and my heart pounding with excitement. Happy fall and may you have lots of fun picking out your pretties and filling your porch with lots of pumpkins!
